16 March 2007: cloudy pink, nosing of candy sugar and caramel. JFH said “fudge and chocolate”. Lovely soft old port, very delicate, but with great length. Alas too faded. Perhaps, according to JFH, cloves.

How astonishing to drink a wine nearly a century old! The colour is an unpromising thin, watery, rusty brown. However, the nose shows spice and Christmas pudding, and on the palate there is a fine attack of sweet fruit and nuts, with plenty of backbone and a harmonious balance and good length. The fruit is decadent and faded, but still amazingly vibrant. It's delicious. Am I being intimidated by the fact this is the oldest wine I have had? I don't think so. sup.
