Niepoort Tasting - Day 1 (Seattle): Unbelievable bottle! So ridiculously dark. Coffee nose. Very young and dense. Seems surprisingly primary. Still some unresolved tannins. Long finish. With more time, there is an appealing confectionery aspect that emerges. I have had other bottles of this wine and they were more than ready to drink (and actually quite average). This particular bottle needs at least 10 more years of bottle age. Superb!
Old Ports with Roy Hersh (Zucca, LA, CA): Decanted 7 hours prior to serving. Rich and dark nose with fat fruit though on the tight side. Balanced, dark and pretty with fat fruit in the midpalate. This was real good and one of the high lights on the evening.
Exploring the wines of Portugal @ Raimondo's (Netherlands): Double decant 12 hours before serving. Beautiful wine, it's all about finesse. Quite light on its feet, actually, and with a lovely freshness to it. Not sticky at all but sweet in an elegant way. Dried cherry, raisins and figs dominate the bouquet.
