(Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape) It was dueling jeros, the next being a 1989 Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape. The week was coming full circle, and the Beaucastel was a complete wine to match. Alexander the Great found ‘pork rinds and salty bacon,’ and along with that there was deep violet, cassis and all the black fruits, dark as night, with a hint of garrigue. The palate was superb with hints of pepper and more black fruits, and phenomenal t ‘n a. Its earth components were gritty, agile and balanced, and its finish thick. The ’89 remains a great wine and the true modern-day legend of this legendary estate

A Double Dose of Angry Man Action, 3/7/2005 95 points

(Beaucastel) had a great nose, wild, gamy and meaty with Provencal spice, plummy fruit and leather, earth and cassis as well. It was complex and delicious with lots of flavors of game, Provencal herbs and tangy black cherry fruit. It was very tasty

(Beaucastel) which had a heavenly nose and is still their greatest .regular. Chateauneuf du Pape to my knowledge. The wine was earthy, gamy, rusty and spicy with great Provencal action and perfectly integrated alcohol. It was an outstanding wine and still shy

(Chateau de Beaucastel Châteauneuf du Pape) A similar rich, saturated red-purple hue. This wine seems to have more secondary aromas than the previous two. Quite gamy, even farmyardy. Nevertheless, there is also a floral freshness to the abundance of rich, dark and smoky fruits. On the palate, this is again a charming and fruit-laden wine. Coffee grounds and spice towards the finish, and more spice and a bucketful of tannins on the length. Another wine that will be superb with further bottle age.

(Chateau de Beaucastel Châteauneuf du Pape) Bags of fruit on the nose. Tannic palate, awash with fruit, not showing its age at all. Some spicy notes. Quite alcoholic. Finishes well with good length. This wine still has great potential.
