  Burg BYO at Blu (Blu, Shangri-La, Singapore): Wow, this has really come good since the last bottle we had some 22 months ago. Back then, I found the wine decent without being special. This, on the other hand, was really good indeed. I loved the nose here. Red cherries, a whiff of flowers, gentle earthy notes, pinpricks of spice, a bit of rubber. Lovely stuff. The palate was in a great place too, and drinking beautifully. It had beautiful balance and the finest tannins, making for classy, silken glide of pure red and dark cherry flavours alongside gentle notes of loamy earth and spice moving through the attack and into the midpalate. Supremely elegant with an edge of juicy yumminess lent to it by 2001 acidity, this was a beautifully seductive Gevrey. The finish was decent rather than impressive, closing out with a bit of spice, but that aside, this was excellent and drinking very nicely indeed. There were reds with more storied reputations on the table this evening, but this was one of my favourites.

  Burgundy Night at Martin and Joyce's (The Serenade): I did not like this at first, but it got better through the evening. In the end, I would say a nice wine, but nothing spectacular. Nose was rather reductive at first, with rubber band notes and pebblely stones dominant. That blew away quickly enough, to show dark cherries, savoury meat and floral notes, along with some earth and tons and tons of spice. All very high-toned, with quite a bit of glyceryl swimming around. The palate was just super-tight at first. A bit volatile, a bit tart, with little flavour saved for lots and lots of peperry spice. Not the nicest wine to drink at that moment. With time, a sweet underlayer emerged, with gummy dark cherries, some herbs and a faint whiff of cigarette smoke riding on a bed of fine but rather firm tannins. Finish was decent, with more perfumed fruit emerging, a whiff of menthol, herbs and again, more spice. As the wine clamed down, it was actually very decent.

  Light/medium ruby color. Cranberries, spice and tar on the nose. Add cola, cherries and a hint of orange peel (?) on the palate. Mostly fruit and spice on the first evening; more smoke and tar came through on night #2. In either case, this is more new-world style -- which is a bit of a disappointment as I can buy much better ones domestically at these prices.
