Some Special Bottles for a Friend's (Almost) 50th (Home and Zoomland): One of the more difficulty bottles to open that I can recall. The cork literally crumbled when I tried to extract it (with a Durand, no less), pulverized dust that left little hope. Nonetheless, I grabbed a decanter and some coffee filters and went to work. These efforts were well rewarded a few hours later. The wine showed absolutely no ill effect, and in fact likely would have benefited from several hours' more air. A beautiful nose of licorice and sweet herbs. An ethereal mouthfeel, almost elusive, but what it lacked in concentration, this wine made up with a purity of flavor that was somewhat haunting. Not as powerful as the best of the vintage, but quite a showing.

Barolo at Pepolino (TriBeCa): Fragrant herbal nose with some hints of oxidation. In the mouth, maderized. Too bad. Not completely bad, but not quite right. Double decanted about 4pm. Drunk around 8pm.
