  • Unfortunately, even though a 6L properly stored, the cork had leaked and the wine was on its way out. Tried immediately after opening, after decanting, after a couple hours, 24 hours and 48 hours. It was decent for a few hours but all nose/taste disappeared after 4-5 hours. Likely a combination of the bad cork and too many years of aging. Bummer...

  • Oldest bottle in my cellar of a 6 box vertical I bought from the winery - perfectly cellared all that time -- this opened up amazingly well - right off the nose it's Silver Oak no doubt -- 1 hour in, WOW did the fruit come alive - tannins resolved fully - no way I'd thought 32 years would be this good - esp if you like older wines - Truly amazing

  • At Silver Oak Release Day, nose of black cherry fruit, and hints of sweatsox, more of the same on the palate, big body, tasty, bottle variation showed here unfortunately but the taste was free so no real complaints, mouhfilling, and a long finish.

  • Almost a “look back” study in earlier CA winemaking. 13.3% ABV. Bought at their Alexander Valley location, recall them chasing away a rattlesnake with a broom. Silver Oak once seemed top tier, then gradually drifted toward commercial vs artisan. This is 30 years old, probably an unfair assessment. Did not decant, intentionally. Medium garnet with slight bricking, fairly consistent to rim. Nose has some fruit and sweetness, but a thinness hinting that depth is lacking. On the palate, acidity is high; it’s outlived the fruit (still present, but out of proportion). Not oxidized or volatile acidity, but past peak. Some tobacco, a little reminiscent of Left Bank Bordeaux, “moins le finesse” (old Cru Bourgeois?). Fairly long finish. Collapsed in a blaze of dominant acidity 30 minutes later, abandoned the bottle. Not scored; was not really intended for consumption in 2020.

  • Colour: deep magenta starting to brown at rim
Nose: huge nose, lush, meaty, dense, cherry, red fruit, vanilla (heavily oaked), some green undertones, berry, fresh/ripe
Taste: sharp acidity, dusty tannins, fruit morphing into secondary notes, tannins almost fully resolved, sour note, vanilla/oak still evident
Overall: shows young? Fruit bomb, tame tannins - not made for ageing?
