Principally or entirely a 1999 production. Quite golden in colour and moderate mousse/bead. This has softened a lot since I last drank it in 2011 and it has lost its Oloroso-type oxidative component. Initially, I mistook it for Ruinart, which I really don't like, because it had a very soft and soapy element but soon after that the zero-dosage hauteur made itself apparent. I have never enjoyed this as much as the other Penet champagnes even though it is the highest cuvee and was limited in production to 416 bottles.

Group de Degustation Diner, L'Anniversaire de Daniel, '1970s in France & Elsewhere' (Hong Kong Wine Vaults, Aberdeen, Hong Kong): Drank double-blind. Light gold colour but the nose suggests a much older wine...a slight corkiness and touch of oxidation. On the palate it is very nutty and with distict elements of Oloroso sherry, although not at all unpleasantly. Very dry finish...again remniscent of Oloroso. Apparently, this is mostly from the 1999 vintage with some older reserves added. The maker's hallmark is very low or no dosage, which in retrospect explained the wine's character. I think this would be better with food, as I also thought when I have drank it non-blind in the past.
