  • The soil in the Herrenberg vineyard is weathered blue slate. It was classified in the top category of vineyards 100-200 years ago when the first ranking came out. Bruno Schmitt sold this estate prior to 2009 to Carl Loewen who now makes the wines. This vineyard includes 6000 ungrafted Riesling vines planted in 1896 (probably the oldest substantial stand of ungrafted vines of any type in Europe). I've had the 2003 and 2004 vintages of this wine.

  • Looks to be a very exciting vintage for this wine. Maybe not quite as leafy on the nose as under the old regime, but still a unique and compelling expression of tart apply Riesling fruit and that je ne sais quoi that stokes my love affair with this estate. The palate is absolutely loaded with fruit and acid, and it distinctly recalls pink grapefruit in its balance of sweet, sour, and a hint of bitter. On the second day, this was less overtly fruity and showed more of its structure. And on the third day, it became sort of creamy and composed on the palate. Outstanding wine.

  • Oktoberfest: 2009 Germans (Wine Exchange - Orange, CA): Very beautiful and unique on the nose with savory sweet notes of crushed stones, meat, and citrus. The palate offers stunning density with excellent acid support and solid complexity. The flavors consist of apple, pear, and citrus with a firm underlying stoney spine. This is one of the better values from the tasting.
