Cork was rotten and hard to remove, but maintained the 17 year seal. The harsh tannin noted by others was not in evidence. The wine is well balanced, with adequate fruit and the smooth delight of well aged PN. Reminds me of the '85 Oak Knoll of which it was said it would never be drinkable because of the harsh tannin. Not true as it turned out, but one needed to be very patient. I wish I had more of this excellent 2001.

Aromas of violets, black cherry, blueberry jam, milk chocolate, oak, and a slight funk. Well integrated flavors. Wine has a lighter medium weight to it. Tannins dominate the finish. Decanting may lessen some of the harshness. Paired with some blue cheese, that seems to bring out the higher and fruitier tones of the wine and takes away some of the edge off both.

Lightly corked, dammit. If anyone is listening, cork sucks! Still, what showed through was pleasant enough that I was willing to drink it. Fresh, red fruits, good acid, pretty. If not corked, probably a Good+ or Very Good.
