SA Wimps 2023; 5/27/2023-5/28/2023 (La Trompette): My handwritten notes say “Lovely. Proper.” Surprised to learn that it’s 15% abv - carries it lightly, a delicate menthol nature to it. I’m a sucker for mature New World bordeaux blends and this is jolly nice stuff - at 15 though I think more than a glass would become tiring.

South Africa WIMPS #165 26th May 2023 (La Trompette, Chiswick): Double decanted 4 hours before broaching, threw a lot of sediment. Nose has a hawthorn, twiginess to start which fades a little to reveal some banana leaf and marzipan notes. Later some sliced plum and Christmas spice Palate has a mixture of cool green fruits and some soy richness. This is decent but I suspect one to drink up. The 15% alcohol would mean I’d never buy this today but was not as noticeable as with some wines. Served slightly cooler than the other reds and I think that helped it.

Brick colored. Musty and funky aromas that took some time to blow iff, but when it did soft red raspberry and dark cherry flavors emerged. Some spearmint on the finish.

Medium deep color with a little brick. Very varietal however it’s ripe. Loads of greens and sour red fruit with slightly prune notes. The palate has loads of sweet fruit but very soft texturally. Solid and still youthful for a 19 year old wine
Too much of a sweet and sour profile for me. Well made and stylistic.

Dark red. Green herbal nose followed by sweet cassis fruit. Sweet red fruit flavours. A bit unbalanced.
