  • Just about where it should be. Perhaps not at its peak but very close. Cherry fruit and herbs with mushrooms. The cherry is a dark but not tart fruit that you get when the fruit emerges at the tertiary level. I wish I had bought a case of these instead of just two. I had one at 10 years and one at 15 years and they were both excellent, with 15 years being better than 10, and I suspect that the next 5 years will be even better.

  • 2.5 years since last bottle. Begins with a full palate of rich red fruit like cherries and red currants, along with sweet tobacco, and vibrant acidity. As it aires, I note a drop in intensity from last time; while the palate delivers, it has lost a bit of power. This becomes more pronounced after about four hours, when the tannins emerge, but the palate lacks the power to stand up to the tannins. Drink now. I enjoy this producer very much, but I will not expect my '06s and '07s to go too long-term in the cellar.
Update: A large glass worth of this wine remained in the bottle overnight, at room temperature, which I drank after the 2001 Giovanni Rosso Barolo Serralunga with JP at Compo Beach. No degradation nor oxidation, this '01 Scopetone Brunello on night two was vigorous, with vibrant acidity buoying the palate which was rich with red fruits. Lovely and impressive, I wish more remained for this second night. My suggestion would be to drink now to mid-term, with a generous decant to capture this great state.

  • Bought 5 years ago at a tasting at Zachy's. Decanted for 2 hours. We drank it with a simple dinner of meatballs and spaghetti with zucchini and roasted peppers on the side. This wine continued to evolve in the glass over the next four hours. It started with dark fruit, tart cherry and moderate to strong acidity. A bit of residual tanins so it's still young. Moderate to light in color with a moderate finish. As it continued to soak up air in the glass and the decanter, it took on components of earth, mushrooms and the terroir components I find very common in nebbiolo. Of course, Sangiovese Grosso in Tuscanny is grown far from Nebbiolo in Piedemont, so maybe it's just mind over matter, but when I polished off the last two ounces in the decanter to rinse it out about 7 hours after I opened the bottle, it showed excellent forest, herb and mushroom components I associate more with terroir with fruit.

89 points means the high end of excellent. That's what this wine deserved. IT'S NOT AN INSULT. Let's all make a resolution to actually use the entire scale. No more "Awful. It was fundamentally flawed and I fed it to my dog . . . 90 points."

  • This bottle did not get opened during our 2001 Brunello and Other Tuscan tasting last month. I'm very glad that I was able to enjoy it on its own, as it may have otherwise been overshadowed by some of the bigger, more modern Sangios on the table that night. This Scopetone is not about size or volume. It showed very nice purity of dark cherry-plum fruit and light leather touches on a palate that is very well-proportioned and not over-scaled. The tannins are still there, but have been smoothed over the past 10 years, and the wine is still young and fresh, albeit slightly rounder around the edges. No degradation over night. Just terrific.

  • Nose of dried flowers and cranberry. Very tart, young and drying palate, with balanced acid and fine but drying tannins. Matched well with a pasta dish headlined by Italian sausage.
