  • Tart cherry palate but not much secondary florals or earth notes. Modern style, decent acidity considering but felt thin and lacked intensity on the finish. Definitely not as expressive as the 2004 or the 2006 (which itself was a bit disappointing). Lackluster, was wrong about my 2011 note. Overall evaluation B- (83).

  • JohnR's "wake": Supplied the bottle tasted with Phredd and the rest of the gang at "JohnR's wake" (note that JohnR is not dead, just moving away and this was his last tasting with us in NC). Agree with Phredd's notes on the initial tasting but I had the benefit of letting the wine sit all night in the decanter and could revisit in the morning. The medicinal and cough drop aromas had dissipated to a cleaner cherry nose with just hints of menthol. Even when tasted after sitting out all night the wine was still super tannic but not as harsh or astringent as the night before. Its obvious the wine needs lots more time on its side before drinking. I would like to counter Phredd and say that the $35 price tag is worth it if it develops as well as the 2004 vintage has, which is drinking great right now. Only time will tell. (wine not rated at this time)

  • NC Cindy Tasting. JohnR's Wake. (WineKnurd's House): NC Cindy Tasting. "JohnR's Wake". A good translucent ruby red in color, right in the wheelhouse of Nebbiolo, the nose on the pop-and-pour was really not good. While there was some pretty rose petal at the the start, it quickly was overwhelmed by a very medicinal character. I don't know about you, but Luden's cough drops are not what I'm looking for in a wine. This medicinal character carries through on a palate that, while parching, is surprisingly not tannic for such a youthful Nebbiolo. We decided that it needed more time, and indeed both the nose and palate did get less medicinal over the next several hours, and added some nicer floral notes, cinnamon, and sweet tarts. Even after time, though, the official WineKnurd rating was :( -. While I think that's harsh, the 84 rating I would have given on the pop-and-pour increased only somewhat. Even at the low Searcher price of $35, this is not a wine to seek out.
