An Intimate Cellar Raid (Rancho de Los Olivos): Ah, the mysteries of premox. I bought eight bottles of this in 2012. The first two, opened in 2016 and 2018, were rewarding, if young. The next two, from a few months back: down the drain, completely oxidized. Just as I was about to give up on the rest, I figured why not pull another cork. Low and behold, a proper bottle in fine form. Vibrant, precise notes of stone fruit, spice and salinity. Well-harmonized, with acidity and sweetness playing very nicely together indeed.
Now, how to account for this variation given identical sourcing and storage? The winemakers in attendance point to the cork, but maybe it's just an unsolvable mystery...

Dinner at Yan (Yan, National Gallery, Singapore): Good, but still painfully youthful. The nose was deceptively generous, with buttery aromas, ripe apples, sweet pineapples, and then more savoury notes of flinty mineral that were typical of Leflaive in this era. The palate was another story though - there was an underlying butteriness to it, but above that it was all bright citrus acidity and tight white fruit. Really youthful, even at 12 years old, with a cut and drive that I do not normally associate with this bottling. Almost painfully citrus and a bit tart towards the chalky, mineral finish actually. This is a good wine, with the bones to age, but a bit too tight at the moment.

Light yellow. Still very lively on the palette.
