Dinner with Mahesh (San Francisco): Moderately aromatic, red fruit, a bit of spice; palate is light bodied, higher than expected medium tannins, medium acid, fruit fades through the mid palate; short finish. For the producer, I expected more even despite the year. Drinkable, but unexciting. 85

Nearly a complete counterpoint to the 2002. Blacker in color (hard to tell, it was candlelight and all) and reflected in all aspects of the wine. Sappy nose of black strap molasses, beef bouillon, toasted oak and maple syrup. Not especially pleasant to be honest. Texture borders on being thick. Flavors are not over-ripe but they come en masse in an assault of chocolate, cocoa, coffee grounds, Hershey’s syrup, pomegranate and caramel covered cherry. Tannins are strong and somewhat bitter on the finish. Bottle remained 2/3rds full and a different wine was pulled as a back-up. The next day (and day after) the wine retained its darker flavors. The texture smoothed out, the tannins became less harsh and the wine was more pleasant if highly, highly atypical and distinctly a creature of vintage.

A Monster wine, especially at this level. A bit of heat, but I feel this will resolve. No rush and I think this benefits from some age. HUGE.
