Valandrau vertical (1991-2020) (Fribourg): Selected tasting notes from a complete Valandraud vertical (1991-2020) hosted by a collector with an estate representative. Main observation was that both the work the estate did during the transition phase 2000-2012 is clearly bearing fruit in more recent vintages, further helped by warmer growing seasons that are favorable for this cool site in St Emillon. Additional comments included in the tasting story.
Tasting note: This was decanted prior to serving. A high octane wine, tickling plenty of nerves. While there are aging notes of earth and mushrooms, the intensity and liqueuresque nature mask the red berry fruit. Palate with decent balance, but lacks density and seems to be carried mostly by the alcohol.

Distinctive, lovely bouquet and very perfumed. Ripe, sweet, red fruit. A few tertiary notes but mostly fruit forward. Hedonistic but could probably do with just a little more freshness. A classic of the Garagiste style and right in its drinking peak.

The Greatest Pig Roast Ever?? (Chicagoland): From 1.5L Bottle. Smokey, dark plum and cocoa nose with a touch of wet tobacco. Lush fruits on the palate, Medium plus body, great texture, long gripping finish.

Birthday Bash with Pig (Chicagoland): From 1.5L. Consistent with last note, but an oaky note on the finish I don't normally find in Valandraud. Medium bodied. Tobacco and dark fruits. Nice wine.

A great assortment from a generous friend (Columbus, OH): Tame relative to a number of young Garagiste wines, and doesn't come across as particularly modern. Dark fruit. Very enjoyable wine.
