  • Tasted at ÉPURE, Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong
2009 François Villard Condrieu DePoncins demonstrated that great Condrieu could age for a decade to develop complex aromatics. The aged Viognier was clear and medium golden yellow in colour without any noticeable sediments. The nose showed dried chamomile, bruised apples and pears in a background of sea breeze. The mouthfeel was dry, medium-full bodied with rather low acidity. There were intensity and honeyed qualities in a finish of medium length.
Aged Condrieu I tasted before was flabby, bitter and astringent, and lost its revered floral qualities. This wine showed that Condrieu from great producer could be aged for a decade to evolve into another beauty. (91)

  • Chave Hermitage & Brisket (Chez Kailin - Northbrook IL): Small glass, brief note. Still nicely fresh and enjoyable for Condrieu at this age. Even if much of the richness has faded, this hasn't oxidized or become flabby.

  • Pop and poured. Drank over 2 hours. Casual session at ES BK.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, lemon yellow colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of yellow flowers, chrysanthemum, super-ripe mangoes, apricots, hint of lychees. Developed.
On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of super-ripe mangoes, creamy apricots, yellow peach, mint leaf. Slight bitterness towards the long finish.
Drink now, and over the next 3 years.
DePoncins is Villard's top range Condrieu.

  • Dorato intenso, quasi oro antico. Il naso vira verso le sensazioni più minerali, granitiche, ma non mancano suggestioni dolci di maramellata di arancia, miele, gelsomino, liquore all’anice. Avvolgente, quasi salato, ha lunghissima persistenza di lemon curd

  • Full, rich nose of tropical fruits, lanolin, white flowers and spice. Medium-to-full bodied palate with waxy, oily texture. Juicy acids provide lift to tropical fruit and exotic spice. Long, lingering finish. In a great spot right now.
