I have loved the story of Anthill Farms, but while I have always liked the wines, they never went further. This bottle did that. Maybe it was aging it more than typical for Cali Pinot, but whatever it was I was bowled over from first sip. Still fruity (very!) yet also showing a deeper complexity, with aromas and flavors that were actually not easy to categorize. That’s the bonus, where the wine is beyond being picked apart, and just presents itself as a complete entity. This feels like it could go on for a very long time, aging on its balance, and depth of fruit. Delicious.

Based on the tasting notes here I expected a pretty soft, ripe wine that was on the downslope in terms of freshness - was surprised to find one that I felt was honestly very taut, steely, highly mineral.
The nose is unusual- it seems the fruit has faded a bit but none of the other components have. Smells like a super young wine in some ways, tightly coiled. I got an almost stemmy, high-toned sort of minty smoke note, which mingled with subtle but still-present fruit that started fairly bright/tart, then leaned slightly toward the darker spectrum, maybe closest to fresh blueberry, but hard to pinpoint. There's some good lift to the nose, perhaps not enough fruit to balance out the earthy mineral character which makes it almost appear bitter, but still really nice in general.
Palate has more than enough acidity left, still at least medium plus, also highly minerally and showing a mix of dark berry with traces of some brighter, wild fruits too- again hard to pinpoint as something specific, not a problem I have often. The tannins have softened quite a bit, but still sneak in on the finish. Like the nose and initial palate, the finish is also super-highly mineral inflected, almost steely and bitter without going overboard.
Really enjoyable and my wife loved it too. Was lacking a little something to push it even higher for me- maybe it needed more fruit or something, or slightly less bitter quality? On the other hand, I honestly feel like it could age a little longer with plenty of acid left and just enough tannin, and I'd be curious to know how it'd show in say, 5 years...
This bottle seemed to be leaning a bit more towards the black fruit spectrum, with some mulling spices, cola and dried flowers. The acidity is still prominent here. Nice, enjoyable, food-friendly... but not especially exciting. UPDATE: This showed poorly on day two... tired, and oxidized fruit. Drink up...
