  • Color: lively medium garnet, with bricking. Edge is still exhibiting a little transparence
Nose: in a remarkable stage where there is a definite sour cherry, a beautiful dry violet, but also a ton of lush licorice, ink, pine bark, earth, asphalt, a hint of burnt pie crust
Palate: medium-high acidity, perfectly mature tannins that still shape the mouth feel but don't grip in a coarse way, rather meander on your gums; this has a medium-full body and a mesmerizing balance. It confirms the nose but some sips reveal a rotund milk chocolate and espresso flavor
    Finish: one minute plus

I can't lie: this did extract a teardrop from the old weathered hide. It reminds me of a dinner with my now wife at Tre galli, where we had a Giacosa barbaresco in a similar state of grace. Ten years ago, in my country, in a city I learned to love in my twenties. But this is not just about memories. This wine is impeccable. It has all the things that make Langhe nebbiolo the wine of Kings. Fruit, flowers, structure, depth, changing from minute to minute in the glass, this is the opposite of cloying. It's like a bath in a cold lake under the Monte rosa in July. The somm/maitre at gatto nero, in his pedagogical mission, when I was in my earliest twenties explained to me that while large, famous producers in the Langhe have very high average quality, the smaller producers drink well on a bad day, and floor you on a good one. I am floored. Best with two or three hours of air at winter room temp, but super from the get go. Food here is recommended but not necessary. Bring out the good glasses and sit with it, it is worth it. This is a hint past the point I favor at the start of a wine's drinking window - it'll go for another 30 years without breaking a sweat but have it now if you like me like tertiaries on the background and some tannins to show up

  • Really interesting mature wine. 3-4 hours decant improved it quite a bit.

  • Took quite a long decant and air to open up. Very alluring feminine wine with a solid backbone nevertheless. Fragrant, flowers, strawberry and even something a bit nailvarishy about it. Firm, long finish. Delicious though, and better with food. Beautiful really. Could age for 10-15 years. Solid 93 and reasonably OK value. 93+

  • Hides the 15% well. Probably in its prime, but quite some time to go.
