  • Guigal St. Joseph & C. D'aumpuis Tasting (Knightsbridge Wine Shop (Northbrook, IL)): Spicy, pretty floral nose. Feminine, raspberry, earth, minerals. Moderate light body. Light stone fruit. Nice acidity, moderate light tannins. Excellent wine.

  • Had this wine before, several times, up on release.
    I enjoyed it more then.
2009 is perhaps not a vintage in my style, as I come up on myself time after time not being really happy with the bottles I open.
Perhaps time will fix this, but I’m not sure, as more or less all wines I’ve had are a bit to all in and clumsy.
This is a huge Syrah, fully packed with smoked meat, smoke, bonfire, charcoal, tar, coffee, herbs, alcohol, oak, vanilla along with black and blue rather jammy fruit.
On the palate this has obvious signs of the vintage too, with alcohol heat, full throttle black and dark fruit, meat, blood and iron, good length and rather big tannins.
Some nice underlying tarter berries to somewhat balancing out the hotter, sweeter and jammier fruitiness.
Oak is still very present, with obvious vanilla and bitterness on the long finish.
This wine is still undelivered, with much more to reveal, but it’s a hard vintage to read.
I believe that this might come out as a great (at least much more pleasant and balanced) 10 years from now, if it holds together all the way.
    91 points for tonight’s performance with a potential of reaching 93 - 94?
    A big wine.
