Bought 7b for 11/b 24 years ago at a local supermarket; this is #5. Decanted with normal sediment for its age. Medium purple with bit of amber edge; overripe red berries, some oak; medium cassis, some cranberry, some oak; some persistence. Lots of flavor, reminds me of a well-aged Left Bank everyday Bordeaux. Interesting to compare the recent Beringer CSKV (say, '15)--same lineage, though the bottle change is amusing. Stored horizontally in a cool, dark basement since purchase. My evaluation: For me, scores on a "100-point scale" are misleading. I use a 4-category scale (perhaps with +/-)--not including flawed--which runs outstanding/notable/drinkable/poor. This is notable+ when considering quality, age, and price.

The long cork was pristine. I decanted the wine, which showed the anticipated browning.
After 30 minutes it was harsh and just barely drinkable. As this bottle was getting long in the tooth and on the slide I intended to give no rating. However after 90 min it started to open and revealed unexpected complexity. On the nose there is leather, cedar, black currant and earthy notes. Cedar, leather, cassis and hints of other black fruits highlight the pallet. Black spice and tobacco on the medium finish.

Nicely surprised but it was cellared perfectly. Good color only slight oxidation on nose. Still balance of diminished fruit and tannins.

Surprisingly balanced and delicious. Likely helped by the 3L format. Drank well for the 90 minutes it took 10 of us to finish it.
