  • An Evening with Friends: Decanted for about 4 hours.
    Classic Bordeaux on the nose.
    Mature flavors. Still some dark fruit present, but it is the earthy profile that shines. Forest floor, spices, cassis, maybe some portobello mushroom. Silky smooth as the tannins are completely resolved.
    This is very old world, and is at its peak. No point in waiting an longer.
    I agree with the other commentators that this is really a food wine. But I think that is a compliment, and can be said for most Italian wines.

  • Dark, concentrated nose. Plush and opulent attack. finish is subdued, a touch of smoke, pleasant.. but at £45 /bt it is not good value.

  • Consistent with the bottle of just a few months ago, this is a fully mature wine. In fact, I'd say it's on the back side of its curve. Aromas of black truffle, some wood, dried violets; the medium-bodied palate largely follows the nose. Moderate length, moderate enjoyment (thanks to really good acids) with food. 13,5% abv., drink NOW.

    Served non-blind over 2 nights; a fair amount of pretty chunky sediment, fyi.

  • A fully mature wine that's already begun its decline. Equal parts soil, leather and muddled dark and red fruits. Nothing too exciting here, though, to its credit, it's still a very good food wine; on its own, not so much. Cork soaked 1/3, in great shape. Double decanted for sediment, immediately returned to bottle, re-corked, and served non-blind 4 hours later. Drink now.

  • Argiano's website says this is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Syrah. The bottom 85% of the cork was wine soaked; fill was OK. Double decanted; moderate-to-heavy sediment. Garnet color with slight orange bricking. Dark fruit and pepper on the nose. Medium bodied with flavors of red berries. Still structured with a good level of acids and tannins. I suspect the fruit was probably better a few years back. The high ratings by Jancis Robinson and James Suckling support the idea that this wine has seen better days. Time to drink up.
