Two days earlier drank 2004 SQN Poker Face Syrah. Best PF descriptor? Monolithic. Complete contrast to Papa which drank young, fresh, nuanced. Lighter in color than most SQN syrahs. Gorgeous glycerin, unctuous mouthfeel. Primary fruit note was cherry, unmistakably New World style. Decanted two hours, might have benefited from longer time as wine continued to evolve over course of 90 minutes.

Drak black in color. Intense aromas of road tar, crushed blackberries, bbq smoke, hint of leather and incense. Rich and opulent in the mouth showing sweet liqueur of blackberry, peppery smoked meats, lowish acidity, and a very long finish that is marred with a touch of heat!

California Wine Weekend; 12/1/2023-12/3/2023 (Mos Eisley Cantina & Waterhouse Restaurant): Nose filled with crushed rock, lavender, black raspberry and fig. Palate is rich figgy and plum fruit driven, but the oak is present and the heat is palpable. I struggle with this a bit as it has moments where it is vividly dark and beautiful, but the heat makes it hard.

SQN Papa was delivered to our table as a complete surprise, a wonderful one to say the least. Upon first sniff I could tell this was right in my wheelhouse regarding development. Silky sweet red/black tannin fruit with wonderful secondary and tertiary flavors. Barrel char present in the empty glass was a fascinating reminder of the wood treatment. No doubt an over the top modern Syrah upon bottling. This is very much a wine I can appreciate today.

(Sine Qua Non Syrah Papa) Roasted fruit, olives, pepperoncini nose; deep roasted fruit, meaty, pepperoni and bacon palate, elegant, like a smooth Northern Rhone; long savory finish 95+ pts.

Sweetish smoky BBQ, integrating oak, a little hot. Not a fan.
