  • Something not quite right with this bottle......possibly because I had not stood it upright for a couple of days and also as I gave it only minimal decanting instead of the usual 6-10 hour double decant. Rather separated at first but it slowly harmonised over the next few hours and started to reveal much of its beauty that has beguiled me on previous occasions. High-toned, light bodied and very feminine in style at first, it began to put on considerable weight with every extra hour. Lots of beeswaxed old furniture and patchouli oil. Fabulous length and resonance inside the head on the finish. I shall treat my 9 remaining bottles with more respect.

  • Quite lean, closed and inexpressive. I love old Rioja and had very high expectations from this bottle, but this particular one was rather disappointing. Nose and palate were quite weak, no usual complexity, didn't feel like a GR, rather like a usual crianza. The bottle was in perfect condition, so I am puzzled. Got another 2 bottles so will have a chance to reevaluate.

  • Shane's Birthday Dinner (Greg & Sayo's House, Hong Kong): Double-decanted for 10 hours before serving. Light dusky cherry red colour. Nose is slightly high-toned red cherries and warm, soft furniture cream on cherry wood furniture. Even on the nose there is a deep reverberating resonance created in the head. Palate is a sharp acidic initial attack then it explodes into superb multi-layered fruits, anise, liquorice root and smoky wafts of different incense sticks. Middleweight mouthfeel....actually light, but with a totally disproportionate and all-conquering thunderous finish that resonates forever. I scored this higher on the two previous occasions I have drank it in the past 12 months but tonight it had a hard act to follow in the 1985 Ch. Haut Brion.

  • Chú Xī (除夕) Dinner at Home on Chinese New Year Eve (Our Place, Hong Kong): Decanted for 5 hours before serving. Initially a light, totally transparent amber colour with a golden hue that became semi-translucent, deep mahogany red with the long decant. Immediate nose of strawberries and raspberries with some patchouli oil and incense smoke that blew off in time and revealed a perfect harmony of deep, deep bright cherry and cherry liqueur fruit, earth, loam....lovely. On decanting the palate was sharp, thin, acidic and slightly dilute with more attractive back end of Middle Eastern spice market and dry brick dust. However, after decanting it come into a superb focus of bright, very bright, sharp, incisive , knife-sharp, pinpoint cherry fruit and a lovely frame of soft oak and powdered tannins. Chiffonesque in resonance at first, it developed an enormous, deep from the bowels of the earth Godzilla slow build rolling and thunderous resonance inside the head that just reverberated on and on. Wow, this is really rather special and it more than delivered on the promise shown by an undecanted bottle drank a couple of months ago.
