Amazingly fresh, with notes of blackcurrant and mint supported by cedar and spice and pleasing subtle tannins. It had a lovely streak of minerality too, and while it shows maturity, this is primarily demonstrated by a superb length of finish. Understated, if not a little austere, I adored the elegance and refinement, which nowadays is an all too rare feature. A super wine. CHP 92 pts

red, faded rim but no brown or orange, Tobacco, baking spices, menthol, good freshness here, blackberries, Still some slightly firm tannin but then a lovely sweetness here, fruit still fairly fresh (becomes a little cooked with time open), lots of sweet spice and tobacco, Drunk with manchego and then roast beef. Decanted an hour which was about right, didn't need opening up but it's not fading in the glass either. Lovely wine, drunk at the perfect time. V. different from last bottle which took an age to come round.

A magnificent Mas de Daumas Gassac vertical from the private cellars of Allard Jakobs (Restaurant Sinck, Amsterdam, NL): Single bottle. Perfectly developed, en pleine forme, spices and fruit, menthol, big but well judged tannins, beautifully balanced, creamy, long finish. Great wine. No hurry. It is easy to underrate these wines in their youth. I know I did.
