  • My last bottle of this. I worried I had waited too long but was pleasantly surprised at how well this was drinking. Attractive nose of dark berry fruit, clay-like earth, and autumn leaves. The palate is medium bodied and relaxed, with a velvety texture and some dusty tannins showing up on the finish. I'm sure at some point the tannins will outlast the fruit, but we're not there yet. Nonetheless, I wouldn't hesitate to open these if I had more.

  • This bottle seemed a little off. Very restrained aromatically, with a kind of lactic quality that only gradually revealed a bit of purple Pinot fruit and faint floral notes. The wine seemed perfectly fine on the palate, with medium light fruit and decent stuffing left for the level. Possibly a touch off, possibly over the hill?

  • This is a fairly simple, but tasty, basic burgundy. It shows characteristic cherry fruit and violets. The palate has good fruit density while being light on its feet, finishing with sweet fruit and smooth, nonintrusive tannins. This has entered its drinking window, it seems to me. Very pleasant.

  • Pop and pour. This was a solid bottle of young, basic Pinot, with some herbal notes to it. It's certainly far too young, but it drinks better now with some more air than I was able to give it this time.

  • There's something about Burgundy that I find daunting (usually the price tag). The motherland of Pinot noir, with its hallowed lieu-dit scattered across the Cote d'Or at times makes me feel like I need to approach these wines with a certain amount of reverence. However, for me to truely appreciate the "transparency" of Pinot noir, Burgundy is unavoidable. So... Let's avoid the heavy hitters for now and start out with a basic Bourgogne instead.
I drank this over two nights, with and without food. Medium maroon color. For some reason, I found the legs quite striking: very slow-moving (when swirled in the glass, the wine formed a solid wall along the rim). Very energetic and potent nose: lots of licorice and soil (not loam, not forest floor, not mushrooms, just dirt like you'd smell while walking on a dirt road when the wind kicks up). That doesn't make it sound very appealing, but I actually enjoyed that sensation. The energy on the nose carried through to the palate. The inital palate had a fair amount of acidity and tannins with the fruit showing up later. That dirt on the nose showed up on the palate, and again, the way I'm writing about it isn't flattering, but it was actually quite tasty. Minerality. There was layers to this wine that forced me to stop and contemplate it a little, it wasn't concentration so much as persistence. Very long finish. Great balance. To me, this wine was in a word: slurpable, which probably isn't the most reverent descriptor, but hey, it is what it is.
