Still very young and primary. The color is like ink. The large portion of PV in the wine adds a raw smoky and grilled meat character. Very primary and uncut. With time in the glass it fleshes out and softens to show dark berries and sweet vanillin from the oak. The structure of this wine is very compact and tight. Would cellar for 3-5 years more.
This wine is great. Comparatively to other Insignias, this wine was a notch below some of the other recent vintages I've had. JP Insignia is still head and shoulders above most wines coming out of Napa, but held against itself, I should have opened the 2010 or the 2007. All the great components are there but it lacked the depth and power I've grown used to. It was thinner - and fantastic.
Ok, so I have Insignia from all different vintages. I just feel that this is a good wine. BUT for the price it is over rated. I feel like the scores are high due to the name. I love Phelps, but I for the price.....this wasn't worth it.
