  • As the 1999 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti was being poured I heard Anthony in a trance like state next to me chant ‘hommmmm, I am entering the perfect sphere’. On release the 1999 La Tache was the best young wine that has ever passed my lips, this 99 Romanée-Conti is perhaps the best red wine full stop to have done so. It is perfect wine to me. It has the most engaging scent with aromas of pomegranate, raspberries, cherries, rosé petals, aniseed and sandalwood. It has brilliant poise and balance, with not a hair out of place. Spherical tannins just occupy a space and it has perfectly ripe fruit with a core of coolness. It is so delicate and lacy but with incredible presence and length of flavour.

  • Perfumed nose of violet, rasberry, bitter chocolate, forest floor. Already precise, complex, sexy red cherry, licorice, minerals, this was changing by the second, this note is but a snapshot. the subtlety on the midpalate and finish was truly amazing, the wine puts on weight in the mouth, akin to silk dancing on the palate. Feminine and cerebral, this is very different than the 99 la tache, not sure better, maybe, but more of a thinking man's DRC. A generous gift, thanks tim. Memorable and will obviously improve dramatically. I can only dream.

(DRC Romanee Conti) Big Boy quickly bought the rights to the evening and made it a Big Boy Production by purchasing a 1999 DRC Romanee Conti and 1999 DRC La Tache off the list. The RC had ridiculous concentration and insane baby fat. Its richness, super freshness and super crushed berry core were the stuff of legends. It was still such a baby yet able to show an enormous amount of greatness. Broad-shouldered and flamboyant, the 1999 RC is up there with the greatest ever made. Aubert certainly thinks so, and even Dr. Conti recently admired the 99 after tasting almost 100 years of RC. It is indubitably one of the great, great wines of all time

(Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti) Beautiful violet and lavender nose; gorgeous lavender, strawberry, rhubarb and blackberry fruit, good acid, structured, rich, seamless and beautiful (Rudy served this blind. Several guessed it was a '99, and DRC, but no one picked it as Romanée-Conti.)
