Opened this wine on Thursday night and was pleasantly surprised by a young but aromatic nose, much better than the previous four bottles, nose of blackberry and blueberry fruit, lead pencil, a touch of tar and licorice, more of the same on the palate, medium body, very tasty and well paired with the meaty lasagna, slightly better the second night, and a long finish. Definitely a winner for $19 out the door.
I originally opened this bottle two nights ago and stored the remaining 50% in the refrigerator. The good news is that the ugly nose was completely gone, nose of pencil lead, black cherry, and forest floor. more of the same on the palate, the flavors were a touch subdued and a touch oxidized, medium body, long finish. All of these suggests this wine is about 3 years from it's peak.
The ugly nose is still present for me but subdued on this bottle, perhaps patience in the cellar will reward you, nose of blackberry, earth and kirsch, more of the same on the palate, even after 90 minutes it was unimpressive, medium/big body, fairly tasty and a touch simple on the mid palate, long finish.
Follow up to the tasting notes on this wine that I posted 2 nights ago. One half the bottle had been refrigerated for 2 days in the hope the ugly nose would resolve itself and result in a more expressive wine. Nose of blackberry, sweet fruit, licorice, and a hint of earth, more of the same on the palate, in short, the nose improved, not quite as rich nor tasty on the palate, no tar quality, long, flavorful finish. Better on the nose and finish but not on the taste so the score is the same.
