  • Incredible showing for this wine. Decanted and drank over 3 hours. Beautiful nose, beautiful flavor profile (dark cherries, cinnamon, currant, mineral, forest), great depth, beautiful mouth feel, and a long finish. A tremendous wine on all accounts. So fresh, excellent structure. Still at peak. Doesn't need much breathing time....it's definitely good to go right now. Should be at a similar peak for at least a year, it may degrade slightly over next 3-4. Drink by 2020 for best results.

  • Good nose, well balanced, near the end of peak drinking period.

  • Previously sampled via CV and in a perfect place right now. Should be consumed within 2-3 years at most, but this is the epitome of what a well-aged and well-built calcab can become. Along with '99 Dunn Howell from magnum, best wine at Rose's 50th celebration.

  • Westchester Wine School - Premium Wine Tasting (Bar Lees, Mamaroneck, NY): Drank at WWS tasting. Crimson red in color, showing some bricking. Lots of funk on the nose, which I found off-putting. I hadn't had this wine in awhile, and it's definitely on the downward trend. Some dark fruit still there, chocolate and forest floor too, along with a decent acidity level. Tannins mostly resolved. I recall this wine being a powerful, lush but well-balanced pour. Now, it seemed a bit tired and faded. I didn't love it, though several at our tasting very much enjoyed it. I still have some in the cellar so will have to revisit soon, hoping this bottle was just slightly tainted.

  • I have to say this is probably the best American red I've had all year. What struck me about this wine was the purity of flavor - the amazingly fresh nose of dark rich fruit, forest floor, and spices that all come together so well. Tannins and acidity are present but not overly so. Despite the relative lack of tannins, the wine still really held together extraordinarily well for three hours in the glass, and in my opinion, shows no signs of slowing down in the coming years. The finish was 25-30 seconds with amazingly very little evolution as the night wore on. I know that many would say that a fairly mass-produced wine that is not a single vineyard product does not merit this high a score, but I'd have to dare those people to blind-taste this vs a Harlan since they are made in a very similar style. Among the best of California fruit-driven wine is contained within this bottle, just an absolutely terrific effort.
