Have a great weekend - - Jon Rimmerman ***************************** FOCUS WINE: Old-Vine White Burgundy Many of you have asked for white wine over the last month so here you go...a wonderful deal on a crossover Burgundy that will please just about every palate. There’s something for everyone here, from hard-core terroir enthusiasts to California Chardonnay drinkers attempting to wean themselves off the oak-chips and high alcohol. From a vineyard that normally produces piquant and mineral-slathered wine, the 2009 vintage has given Berthier’s Macon-Chaintre Vieilles Vignes a magical middle ground that has the rich/natural sap of the vintage with a presence that is true to a Burgundian mélange of citrus, soil and the old-vine pedigree of its place. From 60-80 year old Chardonnay vines just off the edge of Pouilly-Fuisse, this non-malo example is neither too much nor too little of anything – it can be served to a variety of guests seated at the same table regardless of the disparity in their wine knowledge. A top choice from a fastidious small producer that drinks well above its price-point. Enjoy now and over the following 2-4 years. 13.0-13.5% alc. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED as a wine that struts its stuff but still retains a terroir-focused reserve only found in the old-world. A top bargain and a great choice if you are bringing wine to a dinner party and are unsure of the participants (not an easy hurdle to prepare for): 2009 Pascal Berthier Macon-Chaintre Vieilles Vignes - (compare at $17-22) FIRST COME FIRST SERVED at this price up to 24/person until we run out ***************************** Aged Barolo An opportunity like this does not come around very often and this impeccable library release from Oddero proves the notion that waiting may be the hardest part, but it’s worth it. From one of the more unheralded and traditional/age-worthy producers in Piedmont, Oddero never sets their sight on acclaim in youth, preferring to let their wine speak at age 10 or 20. If you put the best vintages of Oddero in a blind tasting of other old-school producers in Monforte or Serralunga, the results speak for themselves. At ten years of age, the bottles in this 2-pack are now coming into their own and both should provide powerful drinking and contemplation over the next decade or more. For cellar-aged wine of this ilk, the tariff is more than fair...especially from one of the best vintages of the 1990’s: Oddero Barolo 2-pack (library release with impeccable provenance) - EXTREMELY LIMITED (I'm sure you can find these for less as single bottles but who cares? Will it matter a decade from now that you paid a few dollars less if the wine’s been sitting at 75 degrees on a retailer shelf for the last five years?)
