  • Good wine but slightly rustic - taking terroir into account. Hints of oxidation in nose which may be bottle specific.

  • Still so young but a great bottle direct from the cellars of bouchard. Just a little too extracted and oak filled for me! Needs a lot more time to fully integrate and develop more secondary flavours.

  • The wine will have taken time to reveal itself.
The nose was initially very classic and young with tangy red fruit. With aeration, the truffle will come out clearly.

On the palate, the wine is first on a large, fairly compact and straight body. Then came the deliverance: the wine opens up, with a powerful, fruity and complex juice on an emerging tertiary with notes of leather and flowers. The juice is textured with a very nice touch. Nice balance that gives length. The whole, although very beautiful, still lacks a bit of depth to take a step forward. Maybe I expected too much? In any case, it has continued to improve, so patience will be rewarded with this wine. A majestic finish, worthy of its rank, as intense as it is silky over a long length that stretches over and over again.

It is excellent but not great like the terroir and especially the price claimed may suggest.

  • Medium full color. Fragrant classy nose. Lots of depth and dimensions. Acid is a bit strong in the beginning but resolve to be fine and firm at later stage. Fine balance great class. Great long satisfying finish. Keep getting better and better after 6 hours after opening. It’s great to drink this great 01 on my daughter BD. She is 18 today.

  • Consumed in a flight with the 1995 La Romanee. The 1995 seemed to have a bit more cut, and was more ready than this 2001. The 2001 was a bit more brooding. There was definitely a family resemblance to these wines, right from the deep and concentrated nose to the mid-weight mouthfeel. Most tasters thought both bottles could have been better with a bit more flavour intensity. Having had a couple vintages of Comte Liger Belair's La Romanee, including the perfect 2010, I can say that Bouchard's versions were a significant step down from what is currently being made...and are priced accordingly at a fraction of what current La Romanee trades for.
