  • Yodamark is about to embark on another one of his grandiose pontificating controversial theories, similar to that of Duval era Granges ( read my review of the 1993 Grange) .
I'm developing the long held possibility that some well made high end pinot noirs of age once opened actually do what I was going to call "reversing themselves". But having recently watched Chris Nolan's new movie "Tenet" ( which by the way is absolute garbage) I have decided to call certain aged Pinots I drink from Australia and France as "INVERTED"
So, what i have noticed in some old Yarra Yering, Giaconda, Bass Phillips in the main and many Premier and Grand Cru Burgundies at post 10 years of age is this ability to "invert" themselves. This particular wine when opened smelt funky, tired and was ready to be replaced. it was decanted and was murkey and brown. within an hour it has completed gone from a wine that was visually over the hill and smelt past it best to being bloody superb. But the big kicker in my theory of INVERTED pinots is that i swear this wine not only improved its smell, taste, length and structure with time and air but both Peter and i agreed it appeared to be getting better in colour. I doubt that is even possible but to us ( both sober at the time) swore it lost some murky brownness and started to "crimson" up and improve its clarity. in the end it was simply one of the best Aussie pinots i have had and I'm not a huge YY PN fan. It drank like something from early to mid 90's for the first hour but continually kept reeling back the years into something more modern, fresh and young. God i love Pinot ( i wonder whether the Black Saturday fires might be behind this issue for this wine- who knows, possibly, but i like my theory better)

So there you go avid readers, junior palates, protegees. Yodamarks theory of "INVERTED" pinot has been tabled..
"Ok gents you can put the straight jacket back on, i'm finished typing now"

  • Complex, forest floor, colour still holding up, only some browning around the rim, full of dark cherry, berries, vanilla, some leathery notes, silky smooth mouthfeel and finish with impressive length. Drinking incredibly well

  • Dark red/purple colour. Pleasantly sweet berry fruit aromas. Red and black cherry on the palate, also some plum. Unusually intense and fruity flavours for a PN. Well balanced sweetness and acidity. Medium bodied but a little lacking in length and complexity. Very enjoyable.

  • A perfect cork.
    Bright purple red.
Forest floor and red berries on the nose.
Aims for the heavier end of medium bodied but prominent unbalanced acidity is a huge distraction from noticing anything pleasurable on the palate.
    In decline.

  • Very smooth. Completely ready to drink. Big and chewy. Very unlike most Pinots. Drinks more like a full bodied cab, yet has the more subtle taste of the Pinot. This is a Big wine flying under the radar. Wish I could find more.
