  • Dégustation d'Armand Rousseau Charmes-Chambertin

    1995

  • Rousseau is always one of the very best Domaines in Burgundy for me and not long ago were relatively inexpensive considering. Not now. The world has come for Rousseau so I can no longer afford the luxury. At least I can console myself with memories from these pages. It was a simple life but I digress..... This wine shows all the reasons why Rousseau is so good albeit on a smaller less spectacular scale. At nearly 25 years old this wine is still singing a beautiful song. It has reached a level of maturity which is just about perfect and like all the best Rousseau's it has the trademark supple texture and a fine bone china framework to encapsulate a complex array of flavours. Drinking Rousseau never gets old but probably best to drink this before the sun sets.

  • Paling at rim. Russet rim. Slow legs. Bruised red apple aromas, slight funk and black cherry, sweet mushroom. Very autumnal. Medium acidity, high fine tannin. Not so complex but a good wine to have with game/goose! It does have the persistence, perfume and length of a fine wine but needs drinking now.

  • Palish crimson, slightly cloudy but clean. The nose a little mean, moderate red fruits, some farmyard and a little mushroom. On the palate one immediately notices the acidity, a little high but not excessive. The palate also slightly austere, a faint note of strawberries but the dominante note is of undergrowth and mushroom, as one might expect of a wine of a Charmes of this age. Tannins were soft and round and moderate. All in all, this wine seemed past its best although it was perfectly servicable still. For the money I think you could enjoy a much younger, fresher bottle, not necessarily of Charmes Chambertin, but certainly in the region, and enjoy a far nicer bottle.
