  • The eponymous 1997 is an elegant package, classic claret features, cherries, cedar, salty licorice, a beauty which clearly surpassed the other Lamborghinis in the vertical, one of the best vines in a very long time, as good as they say and worth the high price, stunningly good.

  • Served blind. Nose is marred by a little TCA but the palate tastes pretty clean. Plush and chocolatey, plum, firmly structured with plenty of lingering oak tannin, maybe a bit compressed by taint? I thought this was Merlot dominant blend, suggested 2000 Monbousquet...totally missed the Sangiovese here.

  • Tasted blind. Pretty musty nose, wet basement, indicative of being corked. Some soft cherry scents underneath. It doesn't really seem that corked on the palate, with a nice round body. Cherry soda on the palate, great tannic structure and finish but the fruit is just dysfunctional. I think whatever is going on with this bottle is diminishing what it should be.

  • Everyone thought this was a little corked. I'm not sure myself, but I'll go with it, as the wine was not very revealing nor interesting. But it had come right from the cellar, cold, and not decanted like the other wines on the table, so we did not exactly give it the best presentation. Nevertheless, the bottle was completely consumed, so it could not have been all bad. Anyway, it was my last bottle so I wasn't too inclined to make very critical notes. Still plenty of structure and fruit, so I'd guess it's got plenty of life left if you happen to have a bottle.

(Lamborghini Campoleone Umbria) #1; (initially sold for $50); COLOR-dark; NOSE-big blackberries exploding; dark fruit for days; also a little floral (lilacs) on the back-end that I really like; PALATE-this is drinking extremely young (still a good decade away from mellowing out); I like the dried black tea component I'm getting on the finish; very dry; big complexities; a coffee component; great transition on the mid-palate; this wine flows seamlessly in it's progression; big structure; reminds me of a modern day Bordeaux (meaning a little more fruit); a little rustic play via the Sangiovese on the tail-end; very well made; will easily last another decade; great w/ many types of food; probably not worth $140 as you can get this quality wine today for $70-$90 bones, but this was $50 initially; RP-97; GV-92
