This took 2 hours to open up, which is a similar experience I have had with another 2000 st estephe. Very closed at first and not showing anything...rated at the end of the night. When opened up it was herbal, balanced, rich, classic cassis, evolving nose and palate which were not yet showing secondary characteristics. Sinewy smooth palate with elegant oak. I get the sense this could go a surprisingly long way, but will be solid classic Bordeaux for now if you give it some air.
Splash decanted just before dinner. This made by far the most favorable impression of the case bought EP so far. Elegant nose of red but more black fruit with a bit of tobacco. Very smooth, nice finish. Tasty!
As another note commented, a perplexing experience. I had enjoyed the excellent 1999 and expected the 2000 to be a step up from that. However, I found the nose uninformative and the palate rather dumb: is this wine over the hill or does it need more time? Leaving it in the glass for half an hour did not open it up any more, which suggests that more time will not necessarily improve the wine. For this level of wine and this vintage, a little disappointing, but maybe it was an off bottle.

(Chateau Lafon-Rochet St Estèphe) A new label and matching capsule for the 2000 vintage. This is a dense, glossy, youthful looking wine, with a very expressive nose, throwing out aromas of coffee, chocolate, exotic spices and sweet fruit pastilles. This all says 2000 to me. The palate is full, sweet and rich. There is a good structure although the tannins do not dominate, and only make a strong showing on the finish. It is big, dense, and packed with fruit and creamy texture, although still with a St Estèphe hardness. Balanced.
