  • Moss/ undergrowth, tilled earth, florals, and darker pinot fruit on the nose. Sappy and broad on the palate with more forest berry fruit, licorice, and more red than dark fruits on the palate. Some ferrous, savory notes add to the whole. Deep and supple with hidden power welling up over time. This has power coupled with grace. Some cedar notes on the back end add to the whole. A serious structured yet graceful wine drinking at peak. I am a novice with regards to Oregon pinot, but this is a complicated, harmonious, structured, serious wine. Count me impressed.

  • Beautiful. Not as vibrant as the last bottle I had 2+ years ago, but this was from a different source, plus bottle variation etc so who knows, but it’s entirely likely this is starting to decline so drink up.

I came across a few ‘02s recently that I very much look forward to.

  • Wines Tasted at HDH Auction; 2/28/2020-2/29/2020 (Spiaggia - Chicago IL): Small glass, brief note. Very good nose, but palate is past its peak to start, then quickly falls further off a cliff.

  • A well made wine at its peak. For the first half hour or so, this seemed over the hill, but soon it was as if a layer of dust had been blown off.

The nose is a tangle of loam, dark fresh fruits, mushrooms, maybe a touch of fresh meat. The palate follows suit and adds a touch of salinity, and a hint of something like blood or iodine or a penny.

The texture speaks to the seamless integration of the tannins, acids, alcohol, and everything else. It gives you the illusion of being full-bodied while retaining a fundamental sensual delicacy. The finish lingers for at least 45 seconds.

Wonderful with food; enlightening on its own. This is in astounding shape and drinking perfectly now. This very well may have the structure to hold up for some years to come - perhaps this will develop some dried or stewed fruit flavors you can find kn even older bottles - but from here on out it is probably just a matter in changing flavor profiles and your personal preferences, not a question of “improvement.”

  • Wow! Pnp. Blasting nose right on opening, then deepening after that and still going strong at the two hour mark in glass. Plenty of salmon/orangish hue to the ruby burgundy red - all the way through. Nose showing its Oregon roots with the slightest bramble, infused into bright, ripe, mature cherry fruit, like sitting out in the sun in a bucket - sappy, and almost fetid in its dank stinkiness of ripe fruited-ness. Yet with bright acidity, and earthy minerality that lends balance, this is just now mature and perfectly peaking. Plenty of tertiaries, most noticeable varnish/shoe polish/roses/wet wool/underbrush (sous bois), but all still following the lead of the exceptional fruit and balance. Magnificent really, and living up to its namesake (Henri Jayer). One of the top three Oregon pinots of all time for me. 94pts pure quality, 96pts personal preference.
