Pulled this bottle because the capsule was pushed up slightly. Cork was a bit stuck, needed the Ah So opener to get it out, but otherwise in good shape. A distinct maple syrup note on the cork, from whatever seepage there was probably years ago, but the wine is in great shape, and exquisite.
Good color, showing medium hay, though turns a light honey with air time; nose is classic aged Austrian riesling, hint of petrol; rich, almost unctuous on the palate, beautifully flavored, lush aged riesling fruit coats the mouth, has some viscosity and weight, explosive umami through the long finish, turning more saline and a little orange peel at the end. Would make a brilliant thanksgiving wine.

(Schloss Gobelsburg Riesling Heiligenstein) ($63.00) This to me is a must-have Riesling, an icon one should secure in every vintage. An important wine. And this one’s full of smoky incense-y complexity, with lots of intricate detail of herbs and grasses; racy and literally spicy – like Chinese 5-spice – and with tactile delineation into rivulets of herbal-spicy complexity which you have all the time in the world to appreciate, because the wine is ridiculously long.

Spicy, ginger, complex on the nose. Kaffir leaf and lime. Long on the palate. Super interesting and super tasty.

Concur with Stadler. Also drunk from a half bottle a year later. Mature now, hedonistic. Outstanding example of Austrian Riesling
