In recent years I've became quite put off by trying old whites from Burgundy due to the increasing chance of facing bottles with Premox. When bottles reach a certain age it becomes difficult to tell if it's a Premox or is it the wine itself that has reached certain stage of its life. I'm inclined to believe that this 98 is simply just mature and not interesting. Golden in color and showing aromas of red dates and hints of Balsamic, one can always say this is quite complex but in my mind it's complex but probably not in a good way. Once white loses all its freshness I lose the ability to enjoy them. Unfortunately the Montrachet is probably at this stage already which is a pity for such a prestigious bottle.

1998 Montrachet seems 5 years too young but very nice at the moment. Good nose of tea leaf, honey, mineral, deep and subtle. Well balance, medium-bodied, beautiful texture with tremendous finished...powerful without weight... nothin' movin'... long finished.

  • This wine has made me nervous for a long time. I had to pour out 6 bottles of ’98 Sauzet Champs Gains that were all PMOXed to death. So this wine sat there and I knew it might just be a $200 POS. Decided to go for it. No PMOX!!!! While not the best Montrachet I have ever had this was pretty nice and considering I thought it might be DOA I enjoyed it immensely. Pairing it with a lobster roll and a lobster claw served with clarified butter didn’t hurt either. This was less racy and stony than I expected and really was a wine that was about texture. While not creamy or oily it definitely had a softness to it that was appealing. Flavors were along the lines of ripe pear and Golden Delicious apple. Not much in the way of layers so the complexity was less than one might hope for but overall appealing for its lush texture and rich flavor profile. Glad we opened it now. Don’t think this is one for the long haul PMOX or no.
