Wines you should have bought by cases (San Shu Gong): Blinded. Amazing young for a wine more than 20 years old. Notes of tea, hint of rubber, nutmeg, spice, with long bitter finish. Tannins were silky. Most guess this as early 2000 wines and were surprise as the tannins were not harsh typically associated with wines from this vintage.

Much better bottle and decanted for an hour plus. Still dense and deep and a bit closed, but kirsch-cherry fruit on nose, some liquorice & clove, finish quite earthy and with a nice finishing Echezeaux mineral streak. Getting quite creamy and opening up with time. Long and probablly still quite a bit of upside potential. very very good.

Decanted an hour or so, bought from Regis Forey. Good bright deep red, at first very tight and closed, some cherry fruit, strong taste of menthol coming through, getting a bit creamy later, but finish austere and still tannins poking through. Certainly a big wine, but not very flattering today - guess it needs time to soften and flesh out, but this bottle was a bit tough and unyielding.

Echezeaux Dinner (Sepia - Chicago IL): Open, double decanted approximately 90 minutes before served. Mostly similar to another bottle from a few months ago. Floral start with ripe fruit and really wonderful Asian five spice. Dense black fruit on palate with wonderful spice that is nicely supported by good acids, tannins and overall structure. Great textures improve with more time in glass, this has clear long-term potential to improve. Quite impressive.

Sunday Night: Martray Vertical and Echezeaux 1999 Horizontal (Sepia - Chicago IL): Open 2 hours before serving but not decanted. Black fruit on nose and palate with really big spice coming through more prominently on palate vs. nose. Spice came across as more meaty (Morey or even Gevrey-like) than what I'd normally expect from an Echezeaux, where i typically expect something more Vosne-like. Flavors are still entirely primary today but the sensational textures show this wine's amazing longer-term potential. This really kept getting better and better with more time in glass. I think was everybody's WOTN.
