Champagnes and Burgundies: Some port-like notes on the nose. On the palate it was rather stewed and pruney, lacked acidity. Another masculine wine from a warmer vintage so guessed 2005 Gevrey. Either it was advanced because it was a ‘03 or because of poor provenance.

Decanted three hours. Dark garnet color with some bricking. Potent nose of raspberries and cherries, with forest floor as well. Medium acidity, chalky tannins, complex palate with dark cherries, red currants, forest floor, cocoa - well layered flavors that end in a medium long finish that shows white pepper notes and oak. Very good, mature Burgundy wine that paired greatly with pan-roasted duck.

An absolute beast of a Burg - shockingly so, and even as I write this I still have to shake my head. This thing was wickedly tannic, stopping just a hair short of stripping off the top layer of your mouth. And the oak! Gobs of heavy vanilla and cedar combining with bold, ripe fruits for a decidely un-Pinot like wine (even Cali would be a stretch). The concensus was that our best guess would’ve been oaky Washington Syrah. Ugh. I wish I could say the wine eventually came around and redeemed itself, but over several days it barely budged. Obviously in need of more time, but it’s so poorly and awkwardly balanced that I’m not sure any amount of time is going to help. Hugely disappointing, especially given the price - what the hell were they going for here??
