Is perhaps regarded as a better wine by the cognoscenti but it was a notch below the 93. It still had a fair whack of sulphur along with sweet orchard fruit aromas and flavours. There was a touch of fig and spice to the flavour profile and it had some toasty development. One member went on winesearcher immediately to see if he could find either of these Chardonnays. Only the 96 was available in Hong Kong. Big G quipped ‘the ink is drying on the labels as we speak’.

Deep gold in the glass. A wonderful nose of vanilla, butterscotch toasted nuts . Concentrated on the palate with good balanced acitidy. The wine was slightly oily and mouthcoating in texture. Very long finish that went for a few good minutes. All class. Better than a 89 Chevalier Montrachet I had a week earlier.

One of the great noses of Oz chardonnay. Wood, malo, deep ceder of just extraordinary proportions. Palate not in the same class but still very classy. Wood, heavy dry white fruits; gets a bit medicinal on the finish but I can look past this.

Clear, gold, youthful. Very clean and crisp, light spice and honey. Delicate flavours, long and resonant, delicious, has softened with age but has perfectly preserved lemon rind and zesty spice, drinking beautifully, an excellent bottle.
