At 18 years old, the fruit is 99% gone and the nose is muted (a bit musty on opening, but that blew off). The palate is well-aged shiraz going over to almost pure cedar notes. Alcohol is well hidden. Decent finish.
Classic syrah fruit. Infinitely better than other bottle opened. Fruit was still strong and powerful. Deep inky color. Rich, earthy flavors of smoky leather and cassis and blackberry with hints of coffee. An opulent wine that still has room to improve.
Remember 1996? The Spice Girls' first album, and my first job; seems a long time ago- slightly too Iong for this once great Shiraz perhaps. Flavor has collapsed a bit, there's a bit of a burnt sherry like alcohol taste with strong fruit and a bit of Spice here too but also a creamy mouth-feel and good balance. Time to drink up!
