  • Virtual Oregon Pinot thanks to Jason (Zoom): Poured into 4 jars for transport at 5pm, drank at 7:30pm over 1 hour. There was a touch of beef blood, a touch of alcohol and the palate is dark.

  • Virtual Pinots with a Little More (Home): Dark red color. PNP, transferred into jars for transport at 4:30pm; drank a glass over 2 hours plus at 7:30pm. Drank the '98 and '99 side by side. Ripe deep red fruits on the nose, baked cherry cobbler, huckleberry, sweet, light spices. The palate is full bodied, ripe, cherry pie, huckleberry, black raspberry, a little scorched earth, pepper, maybe a little alcohol at first but that resolved for me. This was in good shape. Initially I preferred the '99, but I think later I found the '98 a bit better. Qualitatively both were on par.

  • Moderately mature black fruit with overall good balance and textural charm. Seemed a bit oaky when popped-and-poured, but that resolved nicely within an hour. Moderate weight and depth, this is drinking nicely for its age.

  • Superb. Closed at first and surprisingly youthful for an oregon pinot of this vintage, I would recommend either a few hours of air or a few more years in the cellar. Classic Dundee Hills notes of blackberry jam, moist loam soil, fig paste, and earthy black tea. Over a weekend that included the '98 Lafite and '91 '93 and '01 Pride, this was the group's #2.

  • Surprisingly reticent on the nose, even in the Riedel Vinum "Extreme" Pinot Noir glass. Lots of big black fruit, with very prominent cassis, black cherry and blackberry flavors. Clearly a well made wine, but the oak is still quite front-and-center, with much less acidity than I'd like for a top notch Pinot. Very prototypically New World, in fact I would not have guessed Willamette if served blind. This is about an "88" point wine for my preferences, but somebody who prefers riper, blacker Pinot might easily score this 4 or 5 points higher. But I think this wine was the first Oregon Pinot to release at $100, so I had greater expectations for where this wine would be at this point in its development.
