  • The nose reminded me of chocolate covered raisins and stewed fruits, not immediately pleasing but not turning me away. The palate shows stewed, baked cherries, dark earth aromas and a touch of old leather. Unfortunately the acidity on this wine was all out of whack, coming off strong and overwhelming the flavors on the palate. The finish had some nicely resolved tannins but the acidity combined with a bit of alcoholic heat was a bit unpleasing. Perhaps an off bottle, perhaps it was just old, I'm not sure. Having had this wine before, this one was just in a weird place tonight. Enjoyed beside a 2003 Panther Creek 'winemaker's cuvee' that was far more delicious than this.

  • Decent wine of good balance and interesting flavors. Not outstanding but solid and enjoyable.

  • Not the most complex wine, but this is drinking great right now. Smells of dark chocolate, truffle, black cherries, and old strawberries. Smells awesome. The palate is on the fresher side, more red fruit than dark fruit here. Some earth does show up later in the palate along with a structure that is starting to resolve and is entirely gentle. Not very long but ends cleanly. Really tasty stuff!

  • The interest in tasting this particular wine is to see how a good winemaker handles a warm vintage and, on top of that, how that wine ages beyond what one would expect to be the drinking window. With that in mind, I find the wine of interest and quite pleasureable. It has an overall lushness and length due to its age plus it has soft, round flavors that, again, are enjoyable. It is a couple years beyond peak but still quite a nice wine and not bad for sipping or for drinking with rich, but not spicy, foods. August 2012: A few months after writing this first note, I have now had this wine on several occasions and have really grown to love it. It is so smooth and lush and the nose carries hints of cigar box and pipe tobacco and there is an old oak component to it that is very compelling. I am upping my score to one based more on my love of this beauty than anything else.

  • Loads of fresh tobacco, like smelling a pouch of chewing tobacco, backed up by dark cherries. Not too complex and has a hint of greenness to it. Wasn't picking up the heat as much as the last bottle. Didn't get any cola notes this time either, which one would typically associate with a warmer vintage. My notes are all over the place on this wine (not good). In short, it hasn't been great either time but I liked it better now and I believe I am starting to understand it a bit better; hot vintage, cool vineyard, didn't ripen that well and doesn't have a ton to offer. Interesting.
