Duration: 2.5 hours Food: Northern Chinese Aroma: leather, damp forest, hints of smoke, red and black fruits Condition: perfect Note: a very very well conditioned bottle. Fill level was into neck and was easily unbottled with a corkscrew. 1984 has always been a strange vintage, I didnt have much hope in this vintage but this came to be a pleasent surprise. The nose was expressive but not too invasive, notes of leather and smoke mixed with a nice balance of black fruits appeared immediately. Breathe in the bottle for an hour and start drinking and you'll enjoy this bottle. You should drink this with a proper Burgundy glass as I has a comparison between a Zalto Burgundy glass and a Reidel Grape Bordeaux glass and the Burgundy glass worked much better in terms of delivering the aromas.
Another Saturday at Knightsbridge - mostly blind (Northbrook, IL): Served double blind to the tasting group today. Lots of earth and mature black cherry flavors. Modest spice. Mostly earthy and lean from middle to finish. Very classically styled, most tasters were able to identify this as Northern Rhone. A real success that is holding up well from a challenging vintage.
Tasted side by side with chave 81 and 83 Nose is still very secondary and powerful given the age : tobacco, kirsh, liquorice and leather, with only hints of meat flavours. The mouth is complex; layers of tobacco, leather and cigarbox with hints of fruits yield to more tertairy aromas of game meat. The wine is powerful, yet elegant. finale is long and pleasing. Great wine.
