  • Pours a solid Burgundy with a bit of fading at the rim, but no browning. Nose of red florals, earth, baking spice (cinnamon) is there but not dominating, the fruit is where this really shines. Beautifully svelte and with a weightless sensation, sweet strawberry, cherry pit and earth, all this caresses the palate so nicely.. moderate acidity helps carry this through seamlessly to a neat finish. Too old by a decade but still, coming from a good cellar, a very good bottle today. HMS!

  • Nebbiolo and White Truffles (Matt's, Portland OR): Unfortunately this wasn't up to the same level as the bottle I had for my 40th birthday. It's still a lovely wine with sour red cherries, black tea, raspberries, dried herbs, tobacco notes, spices, truffles, and earth notes. The fruit is drying out a bit and this isn't as expressive as the previous bottle. This still shows off a silky, Medium body with tart, high acidity and drying, medium+ tannins. The structure is drying up a bit as the acidity has some sting and the tannins were a bit bitter. I'm glad I got to experience these bottles as they're a great snap-shot of an era that doesn't exist anymore.

  • 13x 1980 Birthday Bash: Tasted blind. This Barolo showed quite well on the palate with lots of freshness, sweet strawberries and minerality. However, the nose seemed showed some unpleasant heat and was less harmonious. Overall no winner as the wine lacked complexity, but a very solid wine.

TN: Tar, herbs, some heat on the medium- expressive nose. Seemed at first a bit tired but became better with some swirling. Nicely layered on the palate with fine, sweet strawberrie aromas, lots of minerality, superbly fresh and with a very round and harmonious structure with melted tannins. Medium length.

Decanting: Double decanted 4+ hours before service, could have even used more decanting (3-4 hours of proper decanting).

  • "You only turn 40 once tasting" (At home): Double-decanted. A bit tired with some emerging beef juice tainting the fruit, hardly any aging notes otherwise. On the palate still a nice red berry fruit. Could well imagine that with more luck you would find a better bottle.

  • The grand finale for my 40th birthday celebration (Adam's, Logan Square, Chicago IL): Nose: The nose is demure and nuanced with an almost delicate touch of dried rose petals, red cherries, dried raspberries, strawberries, tar, licorice, dried herbs, wild flowers, crushed violets, earth notes, black truffles, and a touch of balsamico. The nose is clearly mature but it is beautiful, balanced, and has gone into an ethereal stage that allows you to just get lost in the glass.

Taste: The feel is Medium bodied with slightly, drying acidity and medium+ tannins. The structure is still somewhat present, but is more drying and clearly on the down slope. Still, the feel is beautiful and poised with dried rose petals, red cherries, dried raspberries, tar, licorice, dried herbs, wild flowers, earth notes, black truffles, and balsamico.

Overall: This isn't just still alive, it's a gorgeous and fully mature Barolo. This is expressive and borderline delicate but with enough punch to catch you off guard. I'm used to a lot of 1980s being barely passable, so to have one that is immensely enjoyable is a real treat on my 40th birthday.
