  • Had a blind tasting with 8 friends at Restaurant Vue. The theme was red Burgundy Grand Cru, any producer and vintage.

Tasting in following order, all the cork was perfect and using same glasses except for the 2 older bottles from 90s.

    Pink - 2013 Domaine Thenard Grands-Echezeaux
    Green - 2011 Alain Hudelot-Noellat Richebourg
Light Pink - 2006 Henri Boillot Chambertin
    Blue - 2011 Louis Latour Corton-Grancey
    Yellow - 1999 Domaine Marchand Griotte-Chambertin
Orange - 1995 Domaine Trapet (Jean et Jean-Louis) Chambertin
    No Colour - 1990 G. Vachet-Rousseau Mazis-Chambertin

    My personal ranking as followed
    1) 2013 Domaine Thenard Grands-Echezeaux had lusciously nose of deep velvet red fruits. Silky. Cooked red fruits, fig, prune, vanilla, truffle. Medium+ tannin but integrated, medium+ acidity. Very approachable despite relatively young vintage.

    2) 1995 Domaine Trapet (Jean et Jean-Louis) Chambertin had red fruits, earth, truffle, high acidity, medium+ tannin. Smooth and balanced finish. Tannin fully integrated. Fully developed. The wine appear to be slightly cloudy, it could be better if rested upright a day before to allow the sediment to settle.

    3) 1999 Domaine Marchand Griotte-Chambertin
Deep velvet nose of truffle, strawberry, fig, prune, red fruits, medium+ tannin (more to high) and medium+ acidity.

    4) 2011 Louis Latour Corton-Grancey had pronounced nose intensity of cooked red fruits, truffle, fig, prune, vanilla, toast. Medium+ tannin and medium+ acidity.

    5) 2011 Alain Hudelot-Noellat Richebourg had pronounced nose intensity of of red fruits, cooked red fruits, fig, prune, green bell pepper, slight gassy. I recently drank 2011 Alain Hudelot-Noellat Saint Vivant also had this slight gassy taste. (could it be second fermentation in the bottle?) Medium+ tannin, medium+ acidity.

    6) 2006 Henri Boillot Chambertin had medium+ nose intensity with notes of red fruits, fig, prune, vanilla, medium+ tannin (more to high) and medium+ acidity.

    7) 1990 G. Vachet-Rousseau Mazis-Chambertin had only tertiary notes. Black tea, medium+ nose, high acidity and medium+ tannin.

    The WOTN goes to
    1) 1995 Domaine Trapet (Jean et Jean-Louis) Chambertin - 9 points
    2) 1999 Domaine Marchand Griotte-Chambertin - 18 points
    3) 2013 Domaine Thenard Grands-Echezeaux - 28 points
    4) 2011 Louis Latour Corton-Grancey - 30 points
    5) 1990 G. Vachet-Rousseau Mazis-Chambertin - 34 points
    6) 2006 Henri Boillot Chambertin - 35 points
    7) 2011 Alain Hudelot-Noellat Richebourg - 42 points

As of usual blind tasting result, the most and least preferred are always the most obvious. Leaving the in between up to personal palate.

  • fairly dark. lovely caressing lift to classy, harmonious, integrated dark fruits with violet notes, bit refined earthy hints, and firm core. medium-bodied. delicious, elegant flavour of beautifully balanced medley of somewhat etherealised red fruits, touch gamey; bit acidic but exquisite balance. fine, light tannins. long, bit tannic, slightly harsh but pleasantly reverberant finish. bit light and lacking in concentration for the appellation, somewhat over-processed, cleaned up, yet still a great wine.

  • Appearance: Ruby, hint of orange, brick
Nose: Sous-bois, forest fruits, orange peel
Palate: Relatively full bodied, sudden strengthened peak, prolonged solid full finish, hint of burnt nut
Later: Palate hints of austere steel, grassy notes
Later Still: Nose still predominantly sous-bois with notes of plum, cherry and sweet apple
Later Still: Palate more velvety, grand, mild acidic texture
Later Yet Still: Nose of decayed wood
Later Yet Still: Palate aged, murky, velvety, descending

  • Cherry red colour with some brown at edge. Beautifully open nose with dark cherry, strawberry, redcurrant, game meats and earth. Palate medium weight with complex fruit and gamey characters. Fine tannins with some austerity. Much more attractive than 3 years ago - a common experience now with the better 95s.

  • (Old note)
Fully open, absolutely gorgeous nose with layer upon layer of Pinot aromas: smoke, forest floor, liquorice and raspberries. Subtle animaly notes in background. Almost tar. Lovely complex note of chocolate also present. Complex.
Medium-fullish palate still quite austere. Majestic and tough. Perfectly mature with red fruit still present. Cinnamon spiciness combines with surprising notes of smoke and tar. Minerally finish. Splendid!
