  • Dense, rich, ripe. Bit of a fruit bomb with moderate acidity. Grenache to the fore. Meh.

  • Nose of red and blue fruit. Palate is slightly thinner than you would expect. Smoked meat, blue fruit, pencil and alcohol. Showing good development.

  • Gorgeous nose of dark cherry and sweet mint. The palate is back to prunes though (day one), and hot prunes at that, so very different from the last bottle which was just great. You can see where the "only great bottles" comes from with this one, it has been quite variable and this was the least good one I'm afraid. Chateauneuf can be a tough gig these days, and the 15% is doing it no favours. Let's see what day 2 is like, and if it has calmed down at all.
Edit: day 2 brought no relief. Might be destined for cooking now...

  • Opened, decanted through an Ullo filter, cleaned out sediment from the bottle with filtered water, and poured the wine back in. Let sit in the opened bottle for 90+ minutes. This was superb, and it felt like a very pure CdP experience. It was all sinewy fruit, Provençal spice (but not too much), and a feeling of bright sunshine. Smooth and caressing on the palate. A big jump up from my last bottle.

  • Opened to breathe for 1-2h. This is a big earthy oaky CdP, lots of sandalwood on the nose, tobacco, hints of pepper, baking spices, and heat. A velvet hammer of sweet red fruit, earth, tobacco, mineral, and black pepper. Great heft, intensity, and complexity. Tonight with grilled chicken. Just as lovely (and hefty!) on Day 2. 92/93
