  • Impressed. Would never have guessed this was 22 years old. Has held excellent balance and smoothness, has some youthfulness and power still, but I don’t think this will improve with more age.

  • I have had numerous vintages of O'Shaughnessy Howell Mountain, but I think this is probably the oldest vintage I have been able to appreciate. I will definitely tell you that, based upon previous experiences, there is really no way I would have been able to tell you that this was an O'Shaughnessy wine if served blind. Very dark pour, viscous. The nose and palate showed very dark fruit expression, yet after an hour of being open it did actually start to gain a little bit of youthfulness. Primarily very mature black currants, ripe fig, dark baking chocolate, coffee bean, with a hint of maple bacon in the middle. The back end of this wine is where the appreciation seemed to occur, with building blueberry notes on very soft, silky, round, mature and fully integrated tannins. This is the roundabout intersection where beauty, age and power meet! However, I do sense the fragility of this wine. If I had any of these in my collection, I would start making a plan to drink them.

  • Terroir-istes International - USA - California, Napa, Mountains (Cape Town Law offices): (Tasted Blind): A deep black-ruby colour extending to the rim. The nose reveals enticing aromas of oak spices, chocolate, mocha, undergrowth, liquorice bark and Christmas cake. There is a hint of development alongside some sweet fruit that veers to a volatile note. The tannic structure is both dense and sweet, with fruit coating the tannins. There is power and concentration with plenty of black fruit, spicy oak and cayenne pepper, adding heat from the glycerol. Whilst a touch austere, the length lingers and closes with a chocolate-edged spiciness. Almost port-like with that spirity element but polished and enjoyable.

  • Intimate Dinner Series: Domino and I Commemorate 15 Years w/Great 2001s (Gen Hoe, Geneva): Opens with a nice herbal note, followed by black fruit, licorice, macerated berries and spice. Full-bodied. Black fruit, pepper and spice qualities on the palate with a lengthy finish. Adds a nice eucalyptus/minty note as it sits. Black fruits remain the dominant note though the peppery quality remains. I guessed this was an O'Shaughnessy Howell Mountain. Very youthful, keep this tucked away for a few years. 94+ pts.

    My #3, Domino's #3
    Group #2, 15 pts
