This bottle seemed over the hill. Rusty brown in colour and smell. Oxidised notes but still some residual complexity and sweetish red fruit on the palate hanging on. Seen better years.

I can't remember ever making a "time to drink" note for a Rayas rouge but here it is. This bottle had most of the classic Rayas aroma and flavor elements but they didn't merge into the usual greater-than-the-sum-of-the-parts ethereal magic. I had been told at the domain a couple of years ago that the '97 was a vintage to drink soon. Make no mistake - we were not at all disappointed in this wine! This bottle was acquired in the Bay Area on release and stored in a cool cellar. Decanted 3 hours in advance and still benefited from aeration in the glass.

This was my WOTN against 1989 Petrus, 1986 d'Yquem, 2000 La Turque, and others. Terrific secondary flavors complemented the base of strawberry and light red fruit. Loved this, my second-ever taste of Rayas.

Not sure if it’s the particular bottle - past it’s prime and dated. can still taste it’s pedigree but missing it’s strawberries.

Good soil tones here. Does not show the forwardness of quality fruit that Rayas usually delivers at this age. Fine for the vintage. 91-
